The Different Types And Levels Of Acne
There’s more to acne than just red, inflamed breakouts! There are actually different types of acne and levels of severity.
Inflamed Acne
Inflamed acne is the most common type of acne. It’s characterized by pimples, pustules, and cysts that are red and swollen lesions. The skin can sometimes feel hot to the touch, sensitive, and reactive to external factors. These lesions are most likely to scar, leaving behind red, pink, or brown marks after the lesion heals. The key to treating inflamed acne is to reduce the inflammation. We do this with a calming skincare routine, daily icing of the skin, and lifestyle adjustments that help reduce internal inflammation. Moderate to severe cases of inflamed acne may take longer to clear since so much inflammation is present.
Non-inflamed Acne
Non-inflamed acne on its own is not as common as inflamed acne. Non-inflamed acne is characterized by blackheads, bumps, and closed comedones that are either white or skin colored. The skin generally looks dull with a sluggish complexion, and accompanied by general congestion and texture. The skin is typically not sensitive or reactive to external factors, so it can handle a more aggressive approach with products and treatments. The key to treating non-inflamed acne is constant exfoliation, which is accomplished with high percentages of active ingredients (serums and Acne Med in your skincare routine) and stronger chemical peels used in Acne Treatments. Even mild cases of non-inflamed acne can take longer to clear since so much exfoliation is needed.
Combination Acne
The second most common type of acne is combination acne, which is when both inflamed acne and non-inflamed acne lesions are present. We treat combination acne in two parts--first we treat the inflamed acne by reducing inflammation, and then we adjust your skincare routine and treatment plan to incorporate constant exfoliation to treat the non-inflamed acne. The amount of time to clear combination acne depends on the level of severity for each type of acne.
Severity of Acne
Mild: Less than 10 active acne lesions present at a time
Moderate: 10 to 20 active acne lesions present at a time
Severe: More than 20 active acne lesions present at a time
