Breaking Down The Most Common Acne Myths
Myth #1: Acne is caused by oil and bacteria
Oil and bacteria are definitely part of the acne formation process, but the true root cause of acne is dead skin cells. The technical term for the cause of acne is retention hyperkeratosis, meaning dead skin cells shed faster than the pore can handle.
Myth #2: Acne is caused by poor hygiene
Acne is NOT caused by poor hygiene or not washing your face enough! There are many factors that contribute to acne forming, but acne is only truly caused by one thing—dead skin cells.
Myth #3: Only teenagers get acne
Acne is not a teenager problem,, it’s a dead skin cell problem that can occur at any age! While teens typically start experiencing acne due to hormones, hormones also contribute to adult acne. Also, not having acne as a teen doesn’t mean you’ll never experience it.
Myth #4: You’ll grow out of acne
Acne can definitely improve after your teenage years, but there’s no guarantee and not everyone is so lucky. We’ve seen clients who started struggling with acne as a teen and it continued into adulthood.
Myth #5: Accutane cures acne forever
Acne is never 100% cured, it can only be controlled long-term. While Accutane can have lasting effects for some, there is no guarantee that it will keep your skin clear forever. We’ve seen clients who have done several rounds of Accutane in the past and their acne came back with a vengeance every time!
